What do race car driving, teaching elementary students, personal training and running half marathons have in common? They’re all accomplishments of Ali Nelson, family readiness officer of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines.
Ali, a Marine wife and elementary teacher by trade, has an eclectic history; each step along the way has led her to her current position as liaison between the command and families of 3/4. Throughout her husband’s 12 years in the Marine Corps, Ali has served as a key volunteer and key volunteer coordinator for her husband’s unit, opportunities she deeply enjoyed. When she learned of the position of family readiness officer, Ali knew it was the perfect fit for her. Becoming the FRO of 3/4 was the next natural step in her distinctive life journey.
Since joining the 3/4 family, Ali has been hard at work making sure the window of communication with her 3/4 Marines and families is always open. With the help of an incredible group of volunteers, Ali has started a book club and walking/running club and has a packed calendar to look forward to. While she’s available to offer guidance, Ali encourages her volunteer family members to take the initiative and pioneer their own activities. Volunteers have a strong voice in the Family Readiness Program of 3/4.
Ali is also focused on meeting the needs of her single Marine family members, who are spread across the country and even the world. “Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions,” she encouraged. “The military community is one of the closest family networks that I’ve ever seen. In times of separation or stress, we always come together to support each other. As a FRO, that’s what I’m here for. |
